IAS officer shares video of cleaning staff’s struggle with public spit stains

IAS officer Awanish Sharan has recently brought attention to an important issue through sharing a distressing video on social media. The clip shows a cleaning employee at a railway station diligently scrubbing a pillar stained with paan and gutka spit. Despite efforts made by authorities to maintain cleanliness in public places, instances like these remain common in cities across the country.

The woman, in the video shared on X, expresses her frustration while performing her duties. She mentions that despite pleading with people to refrain from spitting in public areas, she still faces the disgusting task of cleaning up after them. Her words serve as a reminder of the disrespect shown towards sanitation workers and the lack of regard for public spaces.

“Please convey Aunty’s message to the ‘right people’,” reads the caption.

Here’s the video:

Sharan posted the video with the hope that increased visibility would prompt action against those who disrespect public spaces and show appreciation for the hardworking individuals responsible for maintaining cleanliness.

“Thanks to the hardworking lady, who not only works honestly but also gives a strong message on spitting tobacco. #TobaccoFreeIndia,” wrote an X user. Some social media users also commented in favour of banning gutka.

A division bench of the Delhi High Court had prohibited the manufacture, storage, distribution or sale of tobacco, pan masala, gutka and similar products in the national capital back in 2023.
