Lingayat seer Dingaleshwar withdraws nomination from Hubballi-Dharwad seat
Ligayat seer Dingaleshwar Swami on Monday announced that he was withdrawing his nomination from the Hubbali-Dharwad Lok Sabha seat.
Dingaleshwar Swami, who is the pontiff of Shirahatti-Balehosur Fakir Mutt, had filed his nomination from the seat in Karnataka as an independent candidate against Union Minister and BJP candidate Pralhad Joshi.
The seer said that he considered the requests from the leaders of both the BJP and the Congress to withdraw his nomination.
Further, Dingaleshwar Swami said he will on Tuesday announce his political affiliation and the candidate he will support.
“I will decide to remain neutral but will take a decision about whom to support in a few days,” he said.
Earlier, the announcement that the pontiff would file for a nomination received sharp criticism from devotees of the mutt. Taking serious exception, the devotees told him to refrain from contesting.
The devotees said if the pontiff wants to enter politics, he should quit his position from the mutt.
