Washington DC: India has become one of the top sources of new US citizens. As per reports, around 6.7 percent of the new US citizens inducted last year were Indians.

As per the annual progress report released by US Citizenship and Immigration Services (UCIS), 59,100 Indians were naturalised and became American citizens last year.

The top source for new US Citizens is Mexico. With over 1.1 lakh Mexicans becoming American citizens last year, Mexico amounted to around 12.7 percent of new US citizens.

Five percent of the new American citizens originated from the Philippines with around 44,800 Filipinos becoming US Citizens. Both the Dominican Republic and Cuba amounted to a collective 32 percent of new US citizens in 2023.

In 2022, 9.63 lakh people were naturalised as new American citizens. For this fiscal year, around 13.3 percent of Mexicans were converted, followed by Indians at 6.8 percent. The Philippines came in third one again with 5.5 percent of citizens.

To become a US Citizen, a person must fulfil the eligibility requirements laid out in the Immigration and Nationality Act. For instance, a person needs to be a lawful permanent resident for at least five years before being awarded.

Most of the new US citizens in 2023 were naturalised as they had been lawful permanent residents for at least five years. Many of the applicants at been LPRs for three years or had been married to a US citizens for three years. Many of the foreign nationals were granted citizenship for their military service.
