Griselda cast and crew reveal what REALLY went on behind-the-scenes including Sofia Vergara's off camera cravings and a spooky ghost encounter during filming

She’s been working on the project for almost 15 years, and now fans are finally getting the chance to see the one and only Sofia Vergara play Colombian drug lord Griselda Blanco.

Sofia, 51, completely transformed her appearance as well as her usual acting regime in order to portray the so-called ‘Cocaine Godmother’ – who, at one point, earned more than $80 million a month by smuggling cocaine into the US.

The comedic actress, who is best known for her role as Gloria Delgado-Pritchett in TV sitcom Modern Family, admitted that it had been both ‘a pleasure and a torture’ portraying Griselda, and even spent two months practicing certain monologues for scenes in the six-part series.

Now, the cast and crew who worked alongside Sofia in the Netflix show have spoken exclusively to DailyMail.com and revealed what the actress was really like when the cameras stopped rolling – and even confirmed a huge secret that they kept from her on set.

Aurora Cossio, who plays one of Griselda’s smugglers named Estela, admitted that one particular filming location was ‘haunted’ – and led to her carrying a lime in her bag in order to ward off evil spirits.

One particular scene was filmed on The Queen Mary in Long Beach, California, and Aurora revealed that one make-up artist was left shaken after hearing the whispers of a ghost before cameras started rolling.

Asked about her most memorable day of filming, Aurora told DailyMail.com: ‘I remember everybody was talking about the ghost inside The Queen Mary, the makeup artist said, “We were inside and someone actually whispered to me go away!”

‘And she ran away like a crazy maniac and burst into the make-up artist trailer and told us this story and I told her, “you have to say exactly what you heard, every detail about your experience with ghosts inside this boat.”

‘She said, “No one was there and I heard very clearly someone say go away, and I just felt so much cold in my body, and I just ran away.” And for me, of course, that was very memorable and I cannot forget that, it was actually a very awkward place to be in,’ Aurora continued.

‘And so I was using a bracelet with stones to keep away the ghosts and the evil spirits, everybody was talking about that, especially the makeup team who spent most of the time there.’

Aurora added: ‘No one wanted to tell Sofia, so I think Sofia doesn’t know anything about that, we kept it just for us. I am very sensitive and I took that seriously. I mean, I saw her face when she came into the make-up trailer, she was shaking.’

Fredy Yate, who plays the role of Jesus ‘Chucho’ Castro in the series, also remembers it being eerie on set and said of The Queen Mary: ‘It’s haunted!’

Fredy insisted that The Queen Mary in Long Beach, California, is ‘haunted’ and said they were ‘working with a very powerful ‘energy’ when filming on the ship

When asked if he thinks it could have been the ghost of the real Griselda, the Colombian actor replied: ‘Maybe! Because we were working with a very powerful energy and all the time we were talking about Griselda, Griselda, Griselda!’

Aurora agreed, and said: ‘I’m not sure if it was Griselda’s spirit showing up, but oh my God, who knows!’

Another behind-the-scenes detail that both Fredy and Aurora revealed was Sofia’s go-to snacks when the cameras weren’t rolling – and it turns out she has a serious sweet tooth.

‘Sofia loves cakes and sweets and candies and cookies! Aurora explained. ‘She is an addict with cakes and sweets she made me try these amazing cookies and now I cannot live without them!

‘She was always eating these special cakes and stuff from her particular favorite bakery. And I just remember I was trying everything, and I don’t usually eat sweets, but she loves it! She just goes nuts about cakes and sweets and stuff, she’s always eating, eating, eating all the time!’

‘It’s true! She loves sweets all of the time!’ Fredy added. ‘I said, “oh my God, how can Sofia eat so many sweets and look so good?” Because she’s thin, she’s in shape, but she eats donuts, she eats cakes, she eats all the time on set!

‘She was bringing us pizza, donuts, and saying, “guys eat it, eat it!” and sometimes I stopped eating because I was getting fat! And I had to be in shape for my suits because they had taken the measurements and my suits had been made!’

As well as being concerned about not fitting into his costumes, Fredy was also worried that he would accidentally injure Sofia whilst filming as in one scene he was forced to drive a van using just one hand.

The Modern Family actress shared this snap of herself tucking into some sweet treats in between press interviews

‘I remember we were shooting one scene and Chucho had injured his arm and he had to wear a sling, so I had to manage to drive with just one hand – it was so difficult for me,’ Fredy revealed.

‘So I was very, very scared because all of the other actors were inside the van laughing and making jokes and Sofia was sitting next to me I was so scared because I had to drive close to the edge a little bit and I noticed that if I had a problem with that, we could have ended up in the ocean!

‘My hands were sweating and all of the crew was laughing and crying and talking and I ended up saying, “okay please, give me one second to drive this van! This is a one billion dollar van because it contains Sofia and the singer Karol G!”‘ I needed to concentrate and focus!’

Narcos actor Alberto Ammann – who plays the role of Sofia’s second husband Albert Bravo – also opened up about filming inside a vehicle with Sofia and admitted that they ‘laughed a lot’ – despite their scenes together being so intense.

Talking about working alongside the brunette actress, Alberto, 45, said: ‘She’s so open, but she’s very professional. She knows the profession… I don’t like to say the business, because it’s more than that, but we talked a lot, and we laughed.

‘Actually, when we were filming the scene in the car I said to her, “Sofia this guy is terrible”, and she told me… we were speaking in Spanish, and she told me, “yes you are a sh*t!” and we laughed a lot.’

However, Fredy revealed that by the end of filming, Sofia seemed like a completely different person and wasn’t cracking jokes at all.

‘Sometimes on set we were acting weird because we were living our characters,’ he explained. ‘Sophia was going crazy at the end of the show. At the beginning she was so funny, she was enjoying everything.

Alberto Ammann revealed that he and Sofia ‘laughed a lot’ in between takes despite filming such serious scenes together

‘I felt like at the beginning of the show, she was fresh, she was funny, she was making jokes all the time because you know, she’s got a very big sense of humor and all the time she was joking, but then at the end of the show, she was different, totally Griselda.’

As well as wearing a wig, fake teeth, fake eyebrows and a prosthetic nose, Sofia spent over two hours per day in the makeup chair before filming and even learnt how to smoke real cigarettes for the role.

Explaining that Sofia did so to ‘build the character’ of Griselda, Aurora revealed: ‘It is a process and the construction of the character and it is not easy. I know that after filming she was doing a detox.’

Fredy added: ‘I think Sofia tried a lot to be different from Sofia. She didn’t want to look like Sofia or Gloria, her last character, but I think she still looks beautiful.

‘I admire Sofia a lot because she’s struggled with her career for many, many years and she wanted to change for this role and she did a great job. She is fantastic.’
