donald trump elizabeth jean carroll defamation verdict: what the jury said

Former president Donald Trump has been ordered to pay $83.3 million to writer E. Jean Carroll in the defamation trial she brought against him. The jury reached the verdict on Friday, January 26 after deliberating on the amount of damages that Trump should pay to the writer.

The New York jury found Donald J. Trump had acted maliciously in persistently attacking E. Jean Carroll. He was found liable last year of sexually abusing her.

Carroll had alleged that Trump defamed her through social media posts, news conferences, and even during his campaign, beginning in 2019 when she first accused him of raping her in a department store dressing room decades ago.

The verdict comprised $65 million in punitive damages, determined by a nine-member jury who concluded that Trump, aged 77, had exhibited malicious behavior.

This decision followed Ms. Carroll’s legal team highlighting Trump’s ongoing attacks on her, both while in the White House and after leaving office.

The jury also came to the decision that Carroll had suffered more than nominal damages at the hands of Trump and awarded her an additional $18.3 million in compensatory damages.

Carroll reportedly looked over at the jurors with a smile, as they individually confirmed that they had arrived at this verdict.

Donald Trump took to Truth Social, his own social media platform, to attack the verdict, calling it “absolutely ridiculous.” He said he plans to appeal the jury’s verdict, and again accused the trial of being a “Biden Directed Witch Hunt focused on me and the Republican Party.” He added, “They have taken away all First Amendment Rights. THIS IS NOT AMERICA!”
