urbanising up: how yogi adityanath is giving uttar pradesh a metropolitan makeover
Home to one of the most densely populated human habitations in the world, Uttar Pradesh, in the recent past was known for its sprawling rural ramparts. Cities like Lucknow and Kanpur, once hubs of Indian manufacturing, were on the wane. Until 2017, when the Yogi Adityanath government came to power.
The new government, shaking off years of ennui, has gone on an urbanisation blitzkrieg. Not only have Lucknow and Kanpur been given new lives, Ayodhya, the capital city of Hindu civilisational heritage, has been restored to glory. A bunch of new cities are also coming up in UP.
The Uttar Pradesh government has recently announced Rs 200 crore seed capital to build a new city in Kanpur. Famous for its leather, Kanpur has been reeling under the strain of overpopulation for decades. To alleviate the stress on the city, the Uttar Pradesh government is planning a new township with fresh infrastructure.
Additionally, 12 new cities are coming up between Gorakhpur and Ghaziabad. Further, the state government is also making 32 industrial townships to house people migrating from other states to Uttar Pradesh to work in new industrial units.
The biggest urbanisation project, however, has been taken up in Ayodhya. An urban centre for hundreds of years, Ayodhya has seen rapid urbanisation in the last couple of years. The Uttar Pradesh government says it envisions Ayodhya as a metropolis for the world and a city that serves as a model in sustainability.
The government says Ayodhya will be a pedestrian-friendly city, in accordance with the systems in place in popular tourist cities around the globe. The city which recently unveiled the new and glorious Lord Ram Temple, and a shining new airport, will also have an integrated public transport system.
A couple of years ago, speaking at the National Urban Planning and Management Conclave, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had emphasised on the need of proper urban planning.
“Urbanisation and proper urban planning are the need of the hour to ensure that every individual gets access to adequate basic facilities in order to lead a quality life,” Adityanath had said.
It was at this conclave that Yogi Adityanath had said that for India to turn into an economy of 5 trillion USD, UP has to step up efforts and contribute effectively by transforming into a $1 trillion economy.
