People in northwest India will continue to experience cold wave conditions as chilly weather is likely to prevail during morning hours resulting in a temperature fall during the next 5 days.
Cold-day to severe cold-day conditions are likely to continue in some parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Uttarakhand, West Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh during January 13-15.
Meanwhile, Delhi on Thursday recorded a minimum of 5.8°C and a maximum of 18.1°C as sunlight raised daytime temperatures slightly.
The national capital has not recorded a cold wave this winter (a situation when the minimum temperature falls to 4.5 degrees Celsius or more below normal), the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Thursday, attributing this to the dense layer of upper-level fog prevailing over the northern plains over two weeks.
Notably, Delhi has recorded three ‘cold days’ this season, when the maximum temperature was recorded at 4.5°C or more below normal, leading to daytime chills
Fog conditions to prevail over parts of the country
Some parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Uttar Pradesh will see dense to very dense fog conditions for a few hours in the morning during January 12-15.
Isolated pockets of Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha, Jammu, Bihar, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, and north Madhya Pradesh will see foggy mornings during the next 3 days.
Snowfall in hilly region
Owing to a fresh western disturbance, light rainfall/snowfall at isolated places is very likely over Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, and Himachal Pradesh on January 12 and 13.
Further, northeast Monsoon rains are likely over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal, Kerala & Mahe, and adjoining areas of coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam, Rayalaseema, and South Interior Karnataka around January 15.
Light to moderate rainfall at isolated places is very likely over Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Lakshadweep during the next 24 hours and dry weather thereafter. • Isolated heavy rainfall likely over south Tamil Nadu today.
Temperature to plummet in central and eastern India
As per the weather forecast agency, there will be a gradual fall by 2-3°C in minimum temperatures over many parts of central and east India during the next 3 days.
Notably, ground frost conditions are very likely over Uttarakhand, Himachal, and Rajasthan today.
