explained: why gujarat giants are the only team in wpl 2024 that are allowed to field 5 overseas players
After finishing last in the Women’s Premier League 2023 table, the Gujarat Giants (GG) have made a horror start to their 2024 campaign too, following an emphatic defeat against defending champions Mumbai Indians (MI) and another heavy loss against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB)
While the Beth Mooney-led outfit looks out of sorts and has ideas so far in the second edition of the cash-rich league, they do hold a unique advantage over the rest of the competition, which could play a major role in inspiring a comeback. GG is the only team in the competition that is allowed to field five overseas players in the playing XI.

According to the Women’s Premier League (WPL) rules, each team is allowed to have six overseas players in their squad, with four allowed in the playing XI. However, there is one exception. If one of the fixed players is an associate player, then teams can field five overseas players in the playing XI.
In the 2024 WPL, there is only one associate player across the six teams. Scotland’s Kathryn Bryce is the only player from a non-full-member nation playing in the league this year. GG have made full use of the rule and fielded five overseas players in their playing XI in both their two opening fixtures.
In the 2023 season, the only associate player in the roaster of the six teams was the United States of America’s Tara Norris, who played for the Delhi Capitals. Despite taking the first five-wicket haul in WPL history, she was retained by DC ahead of the 2024 season and went unsold in the 2024 auction. DC had fielded five overseas players on most occasions in the 2023 campaign in which they reached the final.
