‘Irresponsible, illiterate’: Typo in Bihar government ad invites criticism by BJP

A typo in an advertisement by Bihar government’s tourism department recently became a point of contention between the Nitish Kumar-led government and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the state.

The advertisement, which was meant to invite entries for a content writing competition, mistakenly featured the word “writting” instead of “writing”.

BJP was quick to spot the error. Party’s OBC Morcha national general secretary Nikhil Anand, while speaking to India Today TV, said that the mistake was indicative that “illiterate and irresponsible” were running Bihar’s Mahagathbandhan government.

Tejashwi Yadav, who also serves as the state’s Tourism Minister, did not immediately comment on the matter.

The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), however, dismissed the controversy as a manifestation of what they termed “TEJASHWI-PHOBIA”.

RJD spokesperson Mrityunjay Tiwari defended Yadav’s performance, accusing the BJP of being intimidated by his effective leadership and resorting to nitpicking over minor issues.

Similarly, the Janata Dal (United) criticised the BJP’s focus on the mistake, suggesting it was an attempt to distract from more substantive political issues.

JDU spokesperson Sunil Kumar Singh condemned the BJP’s alleged negative politics and stressed that the error was unintentional.

The Bihar tourism department acknowledged the mistake and took action to correct the digital versions of the advertisement on its official social media account.

Public Relations Officer Ravishankar Upadhyay informed India Today TV that an internal investigation is underway to determine how the error occurred. He assured that strict measures would be taken against those found at fault.
