NEW DELHI: Union Cabinet Wednesday approved a record hike of Rs 25 per quintal in Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) for sugarcane, the price that mills have to pay, for the 2024-25 sugar season. I&B minister Anurag Thakur said the FRP for the next season has been fixed at Rs 340 per quintal compared to Rs 315 a quintal for the current season.
The announcement of the revised price for sugarcane came much ahead of the usual schedule of June-August every year, at a time when farm unions are agitating on Delhi borders, demanding legal guarantee on MSP for 22 crops.
Officials said it is the maximum ever hike in FRP in absolute terms.
The decision is set to go down well with farmers from Western UP, coming as it does days after govt conferred Bharat Ratna on Chaudhary Charan Singh besides Karnataka and Maharashtra, three major sugarcane producing states.
Thakur said the FRP hike for the next season is 8% and farmers get the maximum price for their sugarcane across the world. The revised FRP will be applicable from Oct 1. “At 107% higher than A2+FL cost of sugarcane, the new FRP will ensure prosperity of sugarcane farmers…This decision of central govt is going to benefit more than 5 crore sugarcane farmers (including family members) and lakhs of other persons involved in sugar sector. It re-confirms fulfilment of ‘Modi ki Guarantee’ to double farmers’ income,” an official statement said.
With the approval, mills will pay FRP of sugarcane Rs 340 per quintal at recovery of 10.25%. With each increase of recovery by 0.1%, farmers will get additional price of Rs 3.32 while the same will be deducted on reduction of recovery by 0.1%.
Thakur said before 2014, farmers had to face problems for fertilizer, price for sugarcane and timely payments. The govt said in last 10 years, it has ensured that farmers get right price of their crop in right time as “99.5% cane dues of previous sugar season 2022-23 and 99.9% of all other sugar seasons are already paid to farmers leading to the lowest cane arrears pending in history of sugar sector”.
