The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Eastern Cape has expressed concern over media reports on what possibly caused the deaths of 21 teenagers at Enyobeni tavern in East London. There has been much mystery surrounding exactly how the youngsters died, but the relevant authorities have been roped in by the provincial department of health to look into the matter and finally provide clarity to grieving parents.
It was recently learnt that carbon monoxide may have been what killed the teenagers, but toxicology results are only expected on Thursday, 30 June 2022. SAPS has condemned any speculation ahead of their release.
“As clearly articulated in a statement released by SAPS on Monday regarding the ongoing investigations, SAPS forensic investigators are still continuing with the investigation into the deaths of 21 children at Enyobeni Tavern in Scenery Park. After conducting investigation in the building structure where the incident allegedly took place, and in the bodies where autopsies were conducted, all the exhibit specimen extracted were then taken to the forensic laboratory for toxicology examination,” said spokesperson Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana.
ENYOBENI TAVERN TRAGEDY: NO OFFICIAL WORD ON DEATHS
Despite the reports on the cause of death in the Enyobeni tavern tragedy, SAPS has essentially told the public to dismiss any informal and unofficial information related to the incident. The province’s police boss Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene has since cautioned against the spreading of fabricated stories as it potentially sows confusion and doubts into police investigations.
“As indicated earlier, at an appropriate time and when an official report has been made available by the experts, the family and members of the public will be informed by the relevant authority. We urge people to refrain from making risky assumptions which do not assist our investigations”
