A veteran surfer savaged by a great white shark has been identified as a local teacher who managed to drive himself to hospital despite being bitten ‘between the a** and legs’.

Murray Adams, 64, was later airlifted to South Australia’s Royal Adelaide Hospital  in a stable condition for further treatment for the injuries to his leg and arm.

Mr Adams, a teacher at nearby Elliston Area School, was attacked as he surfed at Blackspoint on Eyre Peninsula, 650km west of Adelaide, around 1pm on Tuesday.

Witnesses say he paddled back to shore, where he then climbed a cliff to reach the car park, before refusing the offer of an ambulance to drive himself to Elliston Hospital instead.

Surf website Beach Grit said Mr Adams, who recently celebrated 40 years as a teacher, had been ‘bitten between the a** and leg by a Great White [shark]’.

It added: ‘He paddled in but refused an ambulance, reflecting the chaotic nature of a Great White hit and the difference just a few millimetres can make.’

Photographs from the scene show the chunk taken out of the victim’s surfboard by the shark during the attack.

He is reportedly said to have messaged friends: ‘Needs stitches but will be ok. Spread the word. No one goes in the water.’

The attack comes just eight months after another local teacher was killed in a shark attack last May when Simon Baccanello was taken as he surfed in the area.

His body was never recovered but shreds of his wetsuit were later found during an intensive search for his remains.

Tod Gendle, 55, died in another shark attack at Granites Beach on the Eyre Peninsula on October 31, just weeks after Pam Cook was mauled but survived an attack at Beachport on October 2.

Bridgette O’Shannessy also survived another shark attack on November 10 as she dived at Port Noarlunga.
