Dutch pilot shares rare glimpse of Aurora Borealis taken from cockpit. It’s incredible

Dutch pilot Christiaan van Heijst amazed social media users with a breathtaking photo of the Northern Lights taken from his plane’s cockpit. Van Heijst, who is well-known for sharing captivating images from his flights, caught a rare glimpse of the Aurora Borealis while flying over the North Atlantic Ocean.

The image shows vibrant turquoise colour streaks lighting up the sky above the ocean, creating a mesmerising display. The bright orange glow of Reykjavík, Iceland’s capital, can be seen on the horizon, giving a stark contrast to the ethereal beauty of the Northern Lights.

In the caption accompanying the photo, van Heijst described how he had been flying for several hours in silence before spotting the phenomenon. He noted that the artificial lights of Reykjavík served as a reminder of civilisation and human connection, especially during long periods of isolation in the air.

Van Heijst also shared a humorous anecdote about his experience taking the photo. He revealed that his co-pilot, an Icelander, had been unusually quiet throughout the flight, leading him to describe him as someone who preferred solitude and avoided small talk. Despite their differences, the two men were able to appreciate the beauty of the Northern Lights together, highlighting the power of shared experiences to bring people closer together.

“Staring out of his window, eyes set on the distant orange glow from his left-hand window, he solemnly proclaims a few seconds later: ‘… the centre of the universe…’, allowing some moments of quiet contemplation and thought on my side, before switching his intercom off again, as if to underline this statement and retreating back in his cone of silence,” reads the caption.

Social media users were amazed at the incredible sight. “Mother Nature has quite the canvas for her paintings,” commented an Instagram user. “Wow! Puts our small human existence into perspective,” reads the caption.

This is not the first time a pilot spotted the majestic Northern Lights. In a celestial spectacle witnessed from the cockpit, a pilot named Thomas captured the ethereal Northern Lights, or ‘Aurora Borealis,’ in a mesmerising video shared on Instagram back in 2023.
