‘don’t shout at me’: cji dy chandrachud reprimands lawyer during hearing on electoral bond case | video
New Delhi: The Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud on Monday scolded a lawyer during a hearing on the electoral bond case. The CJI reprimanded senior advocate Mathews Nedumpara following a heated exchange.
“Don’t shout at me,” the CJI told the lawyer. “This is not a Hyde Park corner meeting, you are in the court,” the CJI. The CJI’s remarks came after Nedumpara questioned the SC’s ruling.
He commented that “the entire electoral bond judgement was delivered behind the citizens’ back.” A five-judge Constitution bench headed by CJI Chandrachud was hearing a batch of petitions on the scrapped electoral bonds matter when the heated argument took place.
The other judges of the bench were – Justices Sanjiv Khanna, BR Gavai, JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra. “You want to move an application, file an application. You have got my decision as Chief Justice, we are not hearing you,” the CJI added. The video of the incident soon went viral.

Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court came down heavily on the State Bank of India (SBI)and told it to stop being “selective” in providing information regarding the electoral bond data. The apex court directed the SBI to “complete disclosure” of all details related to the electoral bonds scheme by March 21.
The apex court said the details to be disclosed should include the unique bond numbers that would reveal the link between the buyers and the recipient political parties. The bench said that “no manner of doubt that the SBI is required to make a complete disclosure of all the details” which are in its possession.
Earlier on March 15, the top court directed the SBI to disclose electoral bond numbers and called on the SBI to explain the lapse on March 18. “Who is appearing for the State Bank of India? They have not disclosed the bond numbers. It has to be disclosed by the State Bank of India,” Chief Justice Chandrachud said during the hearing.
The ECI on Thursday last week uploaded the data on electoral bonds shared by the SBI on its website detailing the list of donors and beneficiaries. Following a Supreme Court directive, the SBI submitted data on electoral bonds to the Election Commission. However, the SBI did not share the unique bond numbers facilitating the link between donors and political parties.
The disclosed information reveals that SBI issued bonds totalling Rs 16,518 crore across 30 tranches from April 2019 to February 15, 2024.
