New Delhi: Terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba issued threat to Union Minister Shantanu Thakur, the Bengal unit of Bharatiya Janata Party claimed. Thakur was sworn in as Union Minister of State, Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways after the Cabinet reshuffle on 7 July 2021.

A letter was sent to him threatening that if NRC is implemented in West Bengal and if there is any torture on Muslim Community then Bengal and the entire country will burn and “Thakurbari will be demolished. No one will be saved.”

Notably, the BJP candidate for Bongaon had sparked an outrage after he claimed that no Trinamool Congress worker would be granted citizenship. He made the remarks at Gaighata’s Panchpota near Sutia. The remarks were swiftly condemned by TMC leaders who retaliated against the central minister’s statement.

In a widely circulated video clip, Thakur can be heard asserting, “Don’t listen to Trinamool…None of you will lose your job or property. But don’t take Trinamool people along with you. We will not grant citizenship to a single Trinamool Congress man. Let Mamata Banerjee save you.”

Another controversy erupted on April 7 after supporters of BJP MP Shantanu Thakur and TMC MP Mamata Bala Thakur came face to face over the control of a house where community matriarch Binapani Devi, popularly known as ‘Boroma’, lived till her death five years back.

TMC alleged that Shantanu Thakur along with his supporters allegedly tried by force to take control of the Boroma’s house, where Mamata Bala presently resides. Shantanu is the grandson of Binapani Devi, while Mamata Bala Thakur is her daughter-in-law.

“BJP’s hooliganism at its peak. Shocking visuals are coming from Bongaon where BJP candidate & their leader @Shantanu_bjp, along with his goons carrying sharp objects & arms, are planning a violent attack on our Rajya Sabha MP Mamata Thakur’s residence,” the TMC posted on the X handle along with a video of the incident.

Notably, Shantanu had defeated his nearest TMC rival, Mamatabala Thakur, who is also an influential leader of the Matua community, in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls where the CAA and NRC issues were the main poll planks.
