India captain Rohit Sharma revealed that he can easily convince Dinesh Karthik for the wicketkeeper’s role for the upcoming T20 World Cup while joking about getting MS Dhoni back into the senior national team. The IPL 2024 has been looked at as a platform audition for the World Cup, which will begin within a week after the final of the IPL, i.e. June 1 in the USA and West Indies.Â

Rohit, while speaking on the Club Prairie Fire podcast, heaped praise on MS Dhoni and Dinesh Karthik, lauding their form in IPL 2024. In his usual style, Rohit joked it could be hard to convince Dhoni for the much-discussed wicketkeeper spot, adding he was impressed by his former captain’s knock for CSK against MI when Chennai trumped Mumbai at Wankhede Stadium by 20 runs.Â

“I was quite impressed, quite impressed, especially with Dinesh. The way he batted a couple of nights back. Dhoni, as well, he came to play 4 balls, made a huge impact, with those 20 runs. That was eventually the difference in the game,” Rohit said in the podcast.

Dhoni continued his love affair with Wankhede, which was possibly his last competitive cricket match at the iconic venue. Dhoni finished off in style, again, at the Wankhede by slamming 3 consecutive sixes on the trot against MI captain Hardik Pandya in the last over to propel CSK to a winning total of 206 runs. While ruling out a rather ‘sick and tired’ Dhoni, Rohit affirmed Karthik’s chances for a place in the T20 World Cup.Â

“It’ll be hard to convince MSD for sure to come to the West Indies I guess. He is sick and tired. He is coming to the US though to do something else. He is into golf, so he will play golf I guess. DK will be easy to convince I guess,” Rohit said.Â

Rohit’s stump-mic remark went viral as he engaged in an on-field banter with Karthik. He was impressed with Karthik’s fine knock for RCB and teased him for making it into India’s squad for the T20 World Cup.Â

DINESH KARTHIK FOR T20 WORLD CUP?

Rohit revealed that he was trying to put pressure on Karthik who played a 23-ball 53 to guide RCB to a fighting total of 196 runs.Â

“I was just trying to put some pressure on him. Eventually, after the game against SRH, he went and spoke after the SRH game. I think that some captain was asking if I was ready for the World Cup, this is the answer from me,” Rohit said.

Karthik has been juggling between commentary duties and playing franchise cricket for RCB. He has been in great form lately and recently played a valiant knock of 83 runs from 35 balls to nearly help RCB chase down the highest-ever IPL total of 287 runs, put up by SRH.

Karthik had made a sensational return to the Indian team and played in the T20 World Cup in 2022. However, he has not played for the Indian team after their match against Bangladesh in Adelaide.Â
