‘Dhoni told me…’: Chennai Super Kings sensation Sameer Rizvi on his debut vs Gujarat Titans
NEW DELHI: Chennai Super Kings’ latest batting sensation, Sameer Rizvi, left a lasting impression in his Indian Premier League (IPL) debut against Gujarat Titans, crediting his impactful performance to the valuable advice received from CSK’s legendary former skipper, MS Dhoni.
Rizvi’s remarkable debut unfolded during CSK’s commanding 63-run victory over Gujarat Titans at the iconic Chepauk stadium. The CSK batter, who was acquired for a hefty sum of Rs 8.4 crores in the IPL auction, showcased his explosive batting prowess, notably dispatching world-class bowler Rashid Khan for two towering sixes in his very first IPL appearance.
In a post-match interview shared by the IPL’s official handle, Rizvi revealed his determined mindset, stating, “The way the situation was in the 19th over when I was sent, I was going to hit it big if a delivery was on my radar. The very first ball was in my area and I smashed it for a six.”
Rizvi’s journey to IPL stardom has been marked by outstanding performances in domestic cricket, particularly in the UPT20 League, where he amassed 455 runs in 10 matches at a staggering average of over 50, with a remarkable strike rate of over 188.
Reflecting on his surreal experience of joining CSK and meeting his idol, MS Dhoni, Rizvi expressed his gratitude, stating, “When the auction happened, CSK picked me up, I was happy because meeting MS Dhoni was a dream, let alone playing with him. It has been fulfilled.”
Recalling Dhoni’s invaluable advice, Rizvi emphasized the importance of playing his natural game while managing nerves in high-pressure situations. “MSD has told me to play the way I do, telling me that the game is the same, the skill is the same, but the mindset is different,” shared Rizvi.

Despite missing out on his preferred jersey number, Rizvi’s camaraderie with the CSK squad remains unwavering, as he continues to seek guidance and support from his teammates in his quest for excellence on the IPL stage.
“My jersey number is seven. I could not get it. So I got jersey number one. In this team, everyone loves and supports each other. I was playing IPL for the first time and everyone cheered for me with all their hearts. Whenever I want to ask something, I ask my fellow players. I ask them about the mindset of batting. I want to learn these things,” concluded the 20-year-old batsman.
