Chancellor Scholz joins protest against alleged far-right plan to deport ‘unassimilated’ immigrants

Chancellor Olaf Scholz stood alongside thousands in protest against an alleged far-right initiative targeting the deportation of “unassimilated” immigrants from Germany. This follows reports of senior Alternative for Germany (AfD) party members meeting with neo-Nazi activists to discuss such proposals late last year.

At the gathering, Martin Sellner, the Austrian leader of the far-right Identitarian movement, suggested a “remigration” project, advocating the forceful departure of “unassimilated” immigrants, even those holding citizenship. Investigative portal Correctiv identified Roland Hartwig, the personal assistant to the AfD leader, as present.

Chancellor Scholz and Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, representing Potsdam, were in the area on Sunday, emphasizing their commitment to democracy and opposition to fascism. Potsdam Mayor Mike Schubert condemned the plans, drawing parallels with Germany’s dark history.

Simultaneously, a demonstration unfolded at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin. The AfD, currently ranking second in national polls, denied any organizational or financial involvement in the past event, asserting that attendees did so in a personal capacity.

Germany faces upcoming European Parliament elections in June, followed by state elections in September in regions where the AfD holds influence. The party is under scrutiny by security authorities, risking a declaration as an extremist organization, potentially leading to a ban. Despite these concerns, the AfD vehemently denies allegations of extremism or racism.
