Chandigarh: 100 Congress leaders resign over party chief’s post on Pawan Bansal

Around 100 Congress leaders, including Chandigarh Mahila Congress chief Deepa Dubey, resigned from their posts on Tuesday demanding the removal of Chandigarh party chief Harmohinder Singh Lucky. Deepa Dubey said Lucky had disrespected senior Congress leader Pawan Kumar Bansal in a social media post.

She said that after the party announced Manish Tewari as the Lok Sabha candidate from Chandigarh instead of Bansal, Lucky put out a cryptic post saying, “Pawan Bansal ke sath ho gaya khel… Manish Tewari Chandigarh se ummeedwar”.

Notably, most of the workers who resigned from their posts are supporters of former Railway Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal.

“We are not against Manish Tewari. Congress president Lucky didn’t do anything to strengthen the party and ignored every party worker. There is no respect for female volunteers here. He should also explain why there were women’s clothes in the party office. He should be immediately removed from the party,” Dubey said.

She further said that there was an anti-woman atmosphere in the Congress Bhavan in Chandigarh. “Youth Congress activists are slapped and abusing people and making bad comments against adversaries have become very common,” she said.

However, Harmohinder Singh Lucky said the allegations against him were false and concocted. Without naming Dubey, he said the Congress leader should work for the party instead of raising false issues that would only benefit the BJP.

On being asked about the social media post, the Chandigarh Congress chief said his account was being managed by someone else and his post was misquoted.

The nomination of Manish Tewari from Chandigarh instead of Pawan Bansal has led to infighting in the Congress. Bansal lost the 2019 Lok Sabha election from Chandigarh to the BJP’s Kirron Kher by a margin of 46,970 votes.

This time the contest in Chandigarh will be two cornered as Congress is contesting the election as part of the INDIA bloc.

The BJP, which has won the last two Lok Sabha elections from Chandigarh, is hoping for a hat-trick from the region.
