carnival sunrise ship battles flooding on caribbean cruise, company responds

Carnival Sunrise, a cruise ship owned by the company Carnival Cruise Line, faced flooding over the weekend while returning to Miami from a five-day Caribbean cruise, according to a report by USA Today. Several passengers on the cruise spoke to USA Today and recounted their experience of the flood on-board.

“Carnival Sunrise encountered heavy rain while the ship was returning to Miami overnight Friday into Saturday,” Matt Lupoli, spokesperson Carnival, said in an emailed statement.

“Some staterooms were taken out of service for Saturday’s departure as our team completed clean up and replaced carpet. Those guests who were not able to sail were provided full refunds, a future cruise credit and received overnight accommodations if they needed them.”

Rachel Cox, the director of an Arkansas-based nonprofit, who was on the cruise with her partner, son and parents, told USA Today that the company did not initially offer her any compensation even though her belongings – including large suitcases the crew had stored ahead of disembarkation – got wet.

Carnival Crusie set up a call with her only after she complained and later she received a note signed by Carnival Cruise Line President Christine Duffy, offering a 25% future cruise credit. In the note, other guests were also invited to submit documentation for review of damage to personal belongings.

“On behalf of the entire Carnival family, I am writing to express our sincerest apologies for the inconvenience you experienced as a result of the water intrusion incident that occurred the final night of the voyage,” Duffy said in the email, per USA TODAY.

“We understand that being moved from your stateroom during those late hours must have been frustrating, and we deeply regret the disruption to your plans and comfort.”

Carnival Sunrise is a Destiny-class cruise ship operated by Carnival Cruise Line. It was floated out on October 23, 1999, and was christened by Madeline Arison.
