BRO opens new route to reach Ladakh; the third and shortest route linking Manali to Leh

108848951As per the latest development, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has achieved a noteworthy milestone by completing the construction of a 298 km road linking Nimmu, Padam, and Darcha in Ladakh. If reports are to go by, amid the backdrop of persistent border tensions with China, this achievement establishes a third axis to the strategically crucial region, augmenting the pre-existing routes from Manali-Leh and Srinagar-Leh.

This recently completed road will serve as a crucial artery for Ladakh, thereby offering essential connectivity to the region, particularly in challenging circumstances. It will strengthen defence readiness along the northern borders and stimulate economic growth in the Zanskar valley, effectively addressing security and developmental requirements.

In contrast to other routes, this road will provide a shorter and more efficient pathway, with only one pass, Shinkun La, situated at an altitude of 16,558 ft. The initiation of tunnel construction at Shinkun La further stresses the commitment to establishing all-weather connectivity to Ladakh.

Lt Gen Raghu Srinivasan, Director General of Border Roads, praised the determination and dedication of BRO personnel, who worked tirelessly, even in adverse weather conditions, to complete the connectivity project. Despite encountering challenges, such as frozen river crossings and rugged terrain, the BRO successfully fulfilled its mission, showcasing its expertise and resolve.

108524097The completion of the Nimmu-Padam-Darcha road holds particular significance as it ensures year-round access to Ladakh, reducing reliance on aerial routes during winters when the Manali-Leh highway remains closed. This enhanced connectivity will not only facilitate the movement of defence personnel and supplies, but will also boost trade and tourism in the region, benefiting local communities.

The strategic significance of Ladakh is undeniable, particularly due to its proximity to contested borders with Pakistan, Afghanistan, and China. Critical areas such as Kargil, Siachen, and Daulat Beg Oldi further focus on the region’s importance in national security deliberations.
