Bowlers need to upscale themselves: Jos Buttler

JAIPUR: This year’s Indian Premier League (IPL) edition is witnessing scores in excess of 250 and it seems that is the way forward as the shortest format of the game further evolves. Rajasthan Royals opener Jos Buttler feels that this is the time for the bowlers to upgrade themselves.

“A lot of people have talked about the Impact Sub and its effect on the scores. But the batters have been developing really fast and obviously there is technology with bats and the way people train, do power-hitting and keep innovating themselves add to it. But I feel it is putting even bigger value on the really skilful bowlers,” the 33-year-old said.

The England batsman feels that there lies a huge opportunity for the bowlers.

“The guys who are the real game-changers with the ball have a huge opportunity to upscale and find a new way. I know it’s very difficult at times as a bowler, but there lies a big opportunity for the boys with the ball to make a real difference. And sometimes, I guess, it’s about managing expectations about what is successful with the ball. I am sure bowlers won’t feel they have done a good job when they are going at 9 an over, but if the environment of the game is 13 an over, then sometimes going 9 an over is excellent performance. It doesn’t have to be 6 an over or less,” he mentioned.

Buttler added that the teams will have to come up with something new and different to combat the way batters are playing at the moment.
