after india-england, drs controversy hits wpl 2024; hawk-eye’s bizarre call in rcb vs up causes furorechamari athapaththu alyssa healy – watch
While the Decision Review System (DRS) has been under the scanner for some calls in the ongoing India-England series, the 2024 Women’s Premier League (WPL) clash between Royal Challengers Bangalore and UP Warriorz (UPZ) on Monday (March 4) saw a major controversy after Hawk-Eye’s call left players and fans in shock.
The incident occurred in the second inning of the match when UPZ walked out to bat at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. It was star Sri Lankan cricketer Chamari Athapaththu who was the victim of a controversial decision in the bowling of Georgia Wareham.
The delivery from the leg spinner hit Athapaththu on the pads, and he was given a not-out decision from the umpire, which did not surprise many. However, RCB skipper Smriti Mandhana took a punt and reviewed the decision, which led to the big wicket for the home team.

However, the hawkeye’s image projection left players from both sides surprised. What appeared to be an odd leg spinner from the Australian spinner and should have been a missing leg was shown to be turning the other way, like a googly, and smashing into the middle stumps by the replays.
The batter was in visible shock at the decision so was Warriorz’ skipper Alyssa Healy, who was on the non-striker’s end. The Australian captain got into an argument with the umpire as RCB celebrated the wicket
