Det er afgørende for den globale sundhed, at der bliver forsket og udviklet inden for ernæring, siger den amerikanske milliardær og filantrop Bill Gates under en tale i Helsingør.

Hvis den amerikanske milliardær og filantrop Bill Gates skulle vælge et eneste globalt problem, som han kunne løse, ville det være fejlernæring.

Det siger han under en tale i Helsingør i forbindelse med præsentationen af et nyt partnerskab mellem Novo Nordisk Fonden, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation og den britiske fond Wellcome.

De tre fonde er gået sammen om at bruge milliarder på at finde løsninger på globale sundhedsproblemer.

– Mange liv ville blive reddet, hvis vi kunne blive fri for eksempelvis hiv eller tuberkulose. Men de står ikke øverst på min liste, siger Bill Gates og tilføjer:

– For mig er det vigtigste at forhindre fejlernæring.

Han forklarer, at hvis et barn ikke får nok næring i løbet af sine første to leveår, udvikler barnet sig ikke ordentligt – hverken fysisk eller mentalt.

Men ernæring handler ikke kun om at få nok mad. Tarmfloraen har også afgørende betydning for sundheden, tilføjer han.

Derfor er det vigtigt at fortsætte med at forske og udvikle inden for ernæring, understreger Bill Gates:

– En dybere forståelse af ernæring og tarmfloraen kan udløse en massiv revolution inden for sundhed.

Tarmfloraen er de bakterier og mikroorganismer, der findes naturligt i menneskets tarm.

Under talen viser Bill Gates et diagram med tal fra Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation på Washington University, der har ekspertise i global sundhedsstatistik.

Diagrammet viser dødeligheden i verden blandt børn i alderen nul til fem år fra 1990 til 2022.

I de år er børnedødeligheden mere end halveret fra 11 millioner til 4,5 millioner børn.

– Dette diagram er en favorit for mig. Det står øverst på listen over menneskets største bedrifter, siger han.

Og ifølge Bill Gates kan tallene blive endnu bedre:

– Hvis alle børn fik den rigtige ernæring, ville det i sig selv være nok til at halvere børnedødeligheden endnu en gang.

I en verden med klimaforandringer, krig og konflikt er problemerne mange. Den globale sundhed er under pres.

Derfor er der mere end nogensinde før brug for globale løsninger på globale problemer, siger generaldirektør i Verdenssundhedsorganisationen (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

– Mange af disse problemer overlapper hinanden og påvirker menneskets sundhed markant, siger han.

De tre fonde investerer hver 700 millioner kroner til at øge fremskridt og lighed inden for global sundhed.
