london’s ‘iconic’ bt tower sold at rs 2880 crore, set to transform into luxurious hotel

London: In a bold new chapter for London’s skyline, the iconic BT Tower is set to undergo a remarkable transformation into a luxurious hotel, following its recent sale for a staggering £275 million (approx. Rs 2,880 crore). This landmark, which has stood tall since 1965 and once dominated the city’s skyline, once was the tallest building in London, the 177-meter tower has been a key hub for television broadcasters.

Formerly owned by BT Group, the tower’s sale to MCR Hotels was announced recently, marking a new chapter for this historic landmark. BT’s property director, Brent Mathews, expressed excitement about the tower’s future, stating that the deal with MCR Hotels will ensure its preservation for future generations.

Originally known as the Post Office Tower, the building’s role in communications has evolved over the years. Its revolving restaurant, once a popular attraction offering panoramic views of London, closed to the public after a bomb explosion in 1971. Despite this setback, the tower continued to symbolise London’s skyline and was even awarded Grade II listed status in 2003.

Catherine Croft, director of C20 Society, welcomed the news of the tower’s transformation, describing it as “good news” for this “fabulous building” that is a true icon of the 1960s. She hoped the revolving restaurant would be reinstated, offering guests a unique dining experience overlooking London.

Ben Wood, a technology analyst, remarked that the sale of the BT Tower marks the end of an era in the communications industry. However, he noted that the building’s conversion into a hotel presents an exciting opportunity for the public to experience this landmark in a new way.
