Avalanche? Key China border road blocked

DEHRADUN: The crucial Munsyari-Milam road, linking border villages along the Indo-China border, has become impassable due to an avalanche in the Chirkani glacier near Mapang in the Munsyari block of Pithoragarh district.

According to officials, the incident, suspected to have occurred on Saturday evening, has posed challenges for locals who typically migrate to nearly a dozen high-altitude villages in the Johar valley of the district as the summer season sets in.

The affected villages include Bilju, Burfu, Khilanch, Tola, Ganghar, Panchu, Mapa, Martoli, Laspa, Lwan, Sumtu, Rilkot, and Ralam.

Bhupendra Mahra, district disaster management officer, Pithoragarh, said, “We are still verifying whether it was a landslide or an avalanche. A team has been dispatched to assess the situation on the ground.”

While personnel from the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) have managed to clear some portions of the snow-covered road, significant sections remain uncleared, as per sources.

Scientists at the regional meteorological centre in Dehradun highlighted the likelihood of avalanches during this period due to rising temperatures.

“A few spells of snowfall were observed in the upper regions of Pithoragarh last month. Now, with temperatures rising, the glaciers are melting, leading to avalanches and occasional break-offs,” said a meteorological expert.
