Russian military plane carrying Ukrainian POWs crashes; many feared dead
NEW DELHI: A Russian military plane carrying 65 Ukrainian prisoners of war (POWs) crashed while returning to its airfield in the Belgorod Region on Wednesday, state media reported quoting defence ministry.
“A Su-25 plane of the Russian Aerospace Forces crashed while returning to its airfield in the Belgorod Region after accomplishing a combat mission. The pilot died,” according to the statement.
The incident occurred at 11am and the cause of the accident is yet to be ascertained. The authorities were investigating the cause of the crash, and a special military commission was on the way to the crash site, the defense ministry said.
“On board were 65 captured Ukrainian army servicemen being transported to the Belgorod region for exchange, six crew members and three escorts,” the defence ministry was quoted as saying by the RIA-Novosti news agency.
