Apple Watch to get its biggest overhaul with new design, Sleep apnea detection and more

The Apple Watch 9 currently reigns as one of the most premium and best smartwatches on the market. However, its top spot might soon be snatched by its successor, the Apple Watch 10. Rumours suggest the upcoming Apple Watch will bring the most significant changes ever seen in the lineup. Speculation and rumours  indicate that Apple is planning its biggest upgrade yet, featuring a new design, innovative health features, and potentially a new name – the Apple Watch X.

Apple Watch X with new designÂ

Apple is reportedly planning a significant redesign for the Apple Watch, potentially named “Apple Watch X,” as the device approaches its 10th anniversary in September 2024. According to Bloomberg’s analyst Mark Gurman, this new  update for Apple Watch X (Apple Watch 10)  is expected to be the biggest overhaul the Apple Watch has seen yet.

Slimmer profile and a new magnetic band system

The anticipated “Apple Watch X” is rumoured to feature a slimmer profile and a new magnetic band system. Unfortunately, this means current Apple Watch bands will not be compatible with the new model.

Blood pressure monitoring

Apple is reportedly nearing the launch of a blood pressure monitoring feature for the Apple Watch, a long-awaited functionality. According to Bloomberg, Apple Watch X may finally introduce this feature.

The next Apple Watch model is expected to be equipped with a blood pressure sensor, a first for the product line. However, initial readings will not provide specific systolic and diastolic measurements. Instead, similar to the current temperature tracking feature, it will track and display trends in blood pressure over time. Users will receive notifications for rising blood pressure trends and will be encouraged to log potential causes in a journal.

While Apple aims to eventually provide precise blood pressure readings, this technology is apparently still under development and won’t be available with the initial launch.

Sleep Apnea detection

Along with blood pressure monitoring, Apple is reportedly planning to introduce a sleep apnea detection feature with the upcoming Apple Watch. This addition will function similarly to existing health features, providing users with alerts about potential sleep apnea and advising them to seek professional medical advice for further tests and diagnosis.

According to Bloomberg, the Apple Watch’s sleep apnea detection capability will analyse the user’s sleep and breathing patterns to assess the likelihood of the condition. Traditionally, sleep apnea diagnosis requires an overnight sleep study. The integration of this feature into the Apple Watch represents a significant advancement in the device’s health monitoring capabilities.

Hypertension detection feature

Another potential health monitoring feature is hypertension detection. According to Gurman, this system will allow users to record activities during episodes of high blood pressure, helping in medical evaluations. However, to prevent misdiagnosis, the Apple Watch will recommend consulting a doctor or using a traditional blood pressure cuff for precise systolic and diastolic readings.

MicroLED display

In terms of display technology, Apple is rumoured to be developing a premium Apple Watch featuring a 2.1-inch microLED display, reports analysts Jeff Pu and Ross Young. This watch, possibly arriving in 2024 or 2025, might be an enhancement to the Apple Watch Ultra instead of the Series 10.

In addition to microLED, Apple might also be considering various display sizes. The anticipated “Apple Watch X” could be a larger model with a redesigned case and thinner bezels. MicroLED technology, known for its energy efficiency, longevity, rapid response times, superior contrast, and vivid colours, is expected to replace the current OLED displays in Apple Watch models.

Apple Watch X launch and India price

Apple typically unveils new Apple Watch models in September, often coinciding with the latest iPhone release. For 2024, this is expected to be the iPhone 16. However, there are rumours of a potential deviation to celebrate the device’s 10th anniversary next year with an “Apple Watch X.”
