Apple Watch likely to get biggest design overhaul: Thinner body, larger battery, magnetic bands and more

Amidst all the speculation around iOS 18 and iPhone 16, the tech world is highly anticipating the next-generation Apple Watch. Possibly dubbed the “Apple Watch X,” the new generation Apple Watch is expected to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Apple Watch’s launch. To make the Watch X even more special, Apple is reportedly planning to give its new smartwatch the most significant overhaul the Apple Watch has ever seen.

The new Apple Watch model is rumoured to bring the most significant changes ever seen in the lineup, including a major design overhaul, innovative health features, and advanced display technology.

Thinner body and larger battery

One of the most significant anticipated changes in the upcoming Apple Watch 10 is its design overhaul. According to Digitimes, the new iteration of the Apple Watch will feature a resin-coated copper (RCC) motherboard. This leaner RCC motherboard could potentially provide additional space for a larger battery or other internal components.

Interestingly, the shift to an RCC design was initially mentioned by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who also projected that the iPhone 17, slated for a 2025 release, will incorporate a similar RCC mainboard. Kuo emphasised the advantages of this update, notably the reduction in motherboard thickness and a simplified drilling process due to the absence of fibreglass. The RCC design in Apple Watch X is also expected to bring similar benefits to the smartwatch.

New magnetic band

The upcoming model is also expected to feature a new magnetic band system, which could mean that current Apple Watch bands may not be compatible with the new design. However, the magnetic bands could allow for a slimmer design and potentially easier and faster band changes.

Advanced display technology

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the upcoming Apple Watch model may also see advancements in display technology, with the potential introduction of a new 2.1-inch microLED display. This display technology is known for its energy efficiency, longevity, rapid response times, superior contrast, and vivid colours. Additionally, Apple may consider various display sizes and redesign the watch’s case with thinner bezels.

Blood pressure monitoring

Beyond aesthetics, the new Apple Watch X is rumoured to bring a slew of new health features. The Apple Watch 10 may include a long-awaited blood pressure monitoring feature, a first for the product line. Initial readings may not provide specific systolic and diastolic measurements but will instead track and display trends over time. Users may receive notifications for rising blood pressure trends and be encouraged to log potential causes in a journal.

Sleep Apnea detection

Another health feature that could debut with the new Apple Watch is sleep apnea detection. The watch will reportedly analyse users’ sleep and breathing patterns to assess the likelihood of sleep apnea and advise them to seek medical advice if needed.

Hypertension detection

Hypertension detection is another potential feature that may be included in the Apple Watch X. Users will be able to record activities during episodes of high blood pressure, which can help with medical evaluations. However, the Apple Watch will recommend consulting a doctor or using a traditional blood pressure cuff for precise readings.

Apple Watch X potential launch 

Apple generally launches its new Apple Watch generation along with its iPhone lineup. For 2024, this is expected to be the iPhone 16. However, there are rumours that Apple might deviate from this timeline to celebrate the device’s 10th anniversary with the “Apple Watch X.”

Nevertheless, it is important to remember that all this information is based on rumours and leaks. Only Apple’s official announcement will confirm the new Apple Watch’s features, launch date, and other details. However until the official launch,  these rumours do paint an exciting picture of the upcoming new generation Apple Watch X.
