Apple is ready to take local help to start making camera components in the country

Apple is seeking India’s help to reduce its dependence on China for the manufacturing of iPhones. The make in India iPhone program started a few years back, and now you have the latest iPhone 15 models being assembled in the country.

But soon, we could see the company make camera modules for the iPhones in India as well, thanks to its reported partnerships with local vendors. Apple is talking to Murugappa Group and Tata’s Titan Company to help them make the sub-components for iPhone cameras, as quoted by ET in its report this week.

It is interesting that Apple wants to use India for assembling and gradually build a production base in the country as well. The names mentioned in the report allow Apple to benefit from the local subsidies and create job opportunities in different states.

The report also points out that Apple wants to finalise the talks in the next six months and start the process initially by assembling these components and later have the setup and workforce trained to produce the parts as well. Murugappa Group has reportedly acquired a camera module maker, which puts them at the top of the preference list for the iPhone maker when it decides to make the final call later this year.

Titan is equally adept at handling large-scale manufacturing demands but its limited expertise in imaging tech might work against it, especially when it comes the time to make the components from scratch. Apple is eyeing the manufacturing benefits that the Indian government is offering if companies work in tandem with local players.

Sourcing local components also helps Apple to reduce its duty costs which could directly benefit the consumers who can expect the iPhone prices to come down in India in the next few years.
