#ValentinesDay: Indians order 409 cakes per minute, Delhi loves choco lava
Indians ushered in Valentine’s Day with lots of love and sweetness. The run-up to V-day 2024 saw record-breaking sales of roses, teddy bears, flowers and chocolates, with online gifting stores recording 100% growth in sales of V-Day-themed gift hampers compared to 2023. Among the sweet treats sent out by people to their loved ones, cakes remained a top choice – with record sales of 409 cakes per minute (CPM).
While cakes remain a fave in gifting on V-Day, early planners order cakes for midnight celebrations as well. According to Rohit Kapoor, CEO of Food Marketplace Swiggy, orders for V-Day cakes started to surge on the evening of February 13, with the highest volume of orders being placed post-dinner, around 10 pm. The trends report of the food delivery aggregator informed that 409 cakes per minute were sold on Valentine’s Day, which is higher than last year. In 2023, the aggregator delivered 271 cakes per minute (CPM). Choco truffle, chocolate cake and black forest remained India’s top picks among cakes this year. While Delhiites chose to impress their lovers and friends with choco lava cake. After choco lava, Delhi’s second favourite was chocolate truffle cake.
Bows, berries and whimsical details adorn V-Day cakes
Various online food delivery apps had a Valentine’s special interface, displaying a variety of cakes, muffins, cheesecake options. While evergreen heart accents remain a big hit on V-day, cakes with berries, bows and fresh flowers are trending this year. Cakes with pastel-coloured cream, adorned with fresh flowers, and wavy ruffled cream piping are a hit during the current season.
Along with tracking the number of cakes being delivered, the brand tracked that there has been a 95% surge in dining-out bookings for two today in comparison to the weekend.
