csk vs lsg: ms dhoni overtakes ab de villiers, climbs to 6th in elite batting list
MS Dhoni continued his purple patch in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 and slammed a brilliant 28 off just nine balls against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on Friday (April 19). Coming out to bat at number 8, the Indian legend smashed 2 sixes and three boundaries in his knock. Dhoni batted with a strike rate of 311.11 and punished LSG’s bowlers.
Courtesy of his knock, CSK breached the 170-run mark and finished at a huge score of 176/6 in their 20 overs. The former CSK captain pipped AB de Villiers and climbed in an elite list during his knock. Dhoni is now the sixth-highest run-scorer in IPL. de Villiers now sits at the seventh spot.
Dhoni has scored 5169 runs in 257 runs and is still going strong despite batting very late in the batting order. His tally includes 24 half-centuries. Dhoni has 247 sixes and 356 boundaries in IPL. He has batted at an average of 39.45.
He started his IPL career with CSK and captained them from IPL 2008 to 2015. Dhoni moved to Rising Pune Supergiant for IPL 2016 and 2017. He led Pune in 2016 while he played under Steve Smith next year.
Dhoni returned to CSK upon their comeback to IPL in 2018 and captained them to their third IPL title win. Dhoni captained CSK till IPL 2023. He stepped down as CSK’s captain before IPL 2024 and now plays under Ruturaj Gaikwad’s leadership. Dhoni led CSK to five IPL title wins.
Talking of de Villiers, he finished his IPL career with 5162 runs in 184 matches. de Villiers represented Delhi Capitals (formerly known as Delhi Daredevils) from IPL 2008 to 2010. He moved to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in 2011 and represented them till his retirement in 2021. de Villiers smashed 3 centuries and 40 half-centuries in IPL.
The list of batsmen with most runs is topped by Virat Kohli. The India legend has scored 7624 runs in 244 matches and is going strong. He could become the first batsman to breach the 8000-run mark in IPL next year.
Shikhar Dhawan sits at the second spot. The Punjab Kings’ captain has 6769 runs in the league. He is followed by David Warner, who has scored 6563 runs in 182 matches. Mumbai Indians’ Rohit Sharma has 6508 runs in 250 matches and is at the fourth spot. Suresh Raina finished his IPL career with 5528 runs and sits next to Rohit.
