amar singh chamkila director imtiaz ali on caste battle scene in diljit dosanjh film ek hindustani aadmi ko
Amar Singh Chamkila, released earlier this month on Netflix, revolves around the story of musician Amar Singh Chamkila and his singer-wife, Amarjot Kaur. Starring Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra, the film has been well-received by audiences. The film was helmed by Imtiaz Ali. Now, Imtiaz recently spilled beans about a scene in the film where Chamkila’s caste is mentioned.
Imtiaz Ali says THIS about Amar Singh Chamkila’s ‘caste battle’ scene
In an interview with NDTV, Imtiaz explained that caste politics played a significant role in the storyline. He mentioned a dialogue where Chamkila reveals his identity as a Chamar and declares that he won’t starve. According to Imtiaz, this scene highlights the caste battles prevalent in the narrative. The dialogue was, “You think you are my equal just because I asked you to sit with us? Apni aukaat mat bhulo (Don’t forget your status).” To this, Chamkila replied, ‘I am a Chamar, but I won’t die hungry. “
Imtiaz further explained that since the movie focuses on Chamkila’s life as a musician who happens to be a Dalit, there was no need to extensively depict caste issues throughout the film. In the interview, Imtiaz said, “I don’t want to beat that drum, which is already beaten. Ek Hindustani aadmi ko caste ka sab pata hota hai (An Indian knows everything about caste).”
More about Amar Singh Chamkila
The film has garnered praise from critics and audiences alike, with many celebrities commending its heartfelt portrayal, the performances of the lead actors, and the music by AR Rahman. In an episode of The Great Indian Kapil Show, Diljit opened up about playing Chamkila and said, “I used to think that because I am from Punjab, I would understand Chamkila better. But after I met Imtiaz, I completely surrendered to him. The way he stood, the way he spoke, the way he would react, and even the way he would think, Imtiaz had it all figured out because of his extensive research and homework that he had done on Chamkila,”
