Alfa Romeo won’t become an SUV-only brand

Alfa Romeo is set to reveal another new SUV in April, but the company won’t abandon sedans as it enters its all-electric era.

As reported by Autocar, Alfa Romeo CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato has emphasised how the forthcoming electric replacement for the Giulia sedan will remain a traditional sedan “despite the fact this segment is suffering”.

“I strongly believe that when you speak about electrification, you speak about aero, and when you speak about aero, you speak about ‘Berlina’, or sedan,” said Mr Imparato.

“This type of silhouette will come back. I don’t want to become an SUV brand, even if the world is switching to SUVs.”

Giulia

Mr Imparato once again also hinted at reviving two of its iconic models for its all-electric era.

“You will have a Giulia in the Alfa Romeo range – and not only that, because the next steps we are working on are: what is the answer to the GTV, and what could be the answer to the Duetto?” said Mr Imparato.

“But as it is not locked and validated for the moment, I don’t want to elaborate on that.”

Alfa Romeo will reportedly launch all-electric replacements for the current internal-combustion Giulia and Stelvio in 2025 and 2026.

Mr Imparato has said work is already underway for the two electric vehicles (EVs) to be produced at Alfa Romeo’s plant in Cassino, Italy.

The Italian carmaker has previously detailed the electric Giulia replacement will pack between 257kW and 588kW of power, while a flagship Quadrifoglio variant will pump out 735kW – equivalent to 1000hp.

Currently, the most powerful version of the Giulia QV, the ultra-limited GTAm, produces 402kW from its fettled twin-turbo V6.

It’s understood the flagship version of this electric Giulia replacement will be all-wheel drive and have torque-vectoring functionality.

Mr Imparato suggested the electric Giulia replacement will have a range of up to 700km according to WLTP testing.

The electric Giulia replacement will also have an 800V electric architecture, which according to Mr Imparato will allow for a “substantial” battery charge to be completed “within 18 minutes”.

Stelvio

In addition to the electric Giulia and Stelvio replacements, Alfa Romeo is set to reveal the Milano small SUV in April 2024. It will be available in both all-electric and mild-hybrid options.

The Italian carmaker is also readying a larger electric SUV that will slot above the Tonale and Stelvio in 2027. It will form as a rival to the BMW X5 and X6.

As previously reported, Alfa Romeo is going all-electric from 2027.
