24-hour water supply disruption to affect these parts of Cape Town

Parts of Cape Town will experience a 24-hour water supply disruption due to planned maintenance by the Water and Sanitation Directorate.

The maintenance is scheduled from 20:00 on Tuesday, 7 May until 20:00 the next day.

WATER SUPPLY DISRUPTION IN SOME CAPE TOWN AREAS

In a statement, the City of Cape Town said zero-pressure tests (ZPT) and conditional assessments will be done on the water supply network in the following areas:

• Llandudno – Tuesday, 7 May, from 9:00 until 17:00

• Voëlvlei, Sarepta, Oakdene, Kalkfontein and Gersham (Kuils River) – Wednesday, 8 May, from 10:00 until 16:00

• Llandudno – Thursday, 9 May, from 9:00 until 17:00

• Blackheath Industrial, Gaylee, Austinville and Happy Valley – Thursday, 9 May, from 10:00 until 16:00

24-HOUR DISRUPTION ON TUESDAY

In addition, the City of Cape Town said the water and sanitation directorate teams will also undertake maintenance work, including pipe and valve installations, repairs and replacements.

The following areas will be affected by the water disruption:

Parts of Hout Bay (Lower Baviaanskloof and surrounds) – The City of Cape Town said the newly installed high density polyethylene (HDPE) pipeline will be connected to the existing water supply network along Baviaanskloof Road from 8:00 until 17:00 on Tuesday, 7 May.

“This will ensure the completion and optimal operation of the newly installed pipelines along Baviaanskloof Road. The water supply will be shut off during this period to enable the work to be done safely. Residents need to please store sufficient water for domestic use,” the municipality said.

Haasendal, Jacarandas, Jagtershof and Zevenhof – Likewise, the 450mm diameter water supply pipeline to the Haasendal, Jacarandas and Jagtershof areas, will be upgraded. This involves replacing a T-piece and installing a control valve to minimise the impact of future water supply disruptions in these areas.

The metro municipality said this will result in the disruption of the water supply to these areas from 20:00 on Tuesday, 7 May, overnight until 20:00 on Wednesday, 8 May. Water tankers will be made available where required.

HERE’S WHAT RESIDENTS SHOULD KNOW ABOUT THE MAINTENANCE

Residents should note that the maintenance work can sometimes be more complex than anticipated, so the work could take longer.

In addition, the water may be discoloured or look milky for a short period after the supply has been restored.

“This is because of trapped air in the pipes. If left to stand in a glass, the appearance will become clear, like usual,” the City of Cape Town explained.
