What causes nighttime allergies?
According to doctors, having trouble with your allergies at night could be due to:
Water damage leads to mold growing inside walls, and many older homes are also susceptible to buildups of dust, and other allergens in the walls or floorboards.
Humidifiers
Humidifiers are usually helpful for dry sinuses, however, they also increase the production of dust in the air.
According to doctors, mold can grow in humidifier filters if they are not changed or cleaned regularly.
Pets
Another common allergen making things worse in your bedroom could be pet dander – dead skin cells shed by mammals.
Doctors say pet dander remains in the air longer and can accumulate on your carpet or comforter.
Sleeping position
Many times, the way you lie down can cause the fluid in your nose and nasal passage to drop down your throat.
If you are prone to allergies, it leads to irritation in your throat, coughing, wheezing, difficulty breathing, and other symptoms that can make it difficult to get a good night’s sleep.
Side effects of allergies
Allergies can heavily impact your overall health and sleep. A few symptoms like sneezing and sniffling can make it difficult for you to get proper rest. Apart from that, you may also suffer from:
- Daytime sleepiness
- Fatigue and tiredness
- Insomnia
- Insufficient sleep
- Restless sleep
- Sleep medication use
- Snoring
Ways to calm down your allergies
Apart from taking an anti-allergy medicine, doctors recommend managing your allergy symptoms. For this, you can take steps to help relieve the signs that are worse at night, which include:
- Sleeping with your windows closed, but also make sure that your bedroom is well-ventilated
- Taking a shower before sleeping
- Always wear clean night clothes
- Do not use a humidifier at night
- Do not put carpets in your bedroom
- Always make sure to use dust mite covers on your mattress
- Change your sheets at least once a week
- Avoid items that collect dust and moisture, such as soft furniture
- Use an air purifier
- Avoid letting your pet sleep in your bed, or at least on your pillows
- Making sure to change your sleeping position is the best way to relieve allergy symptoms at night. Lying flat tends to make allergies worse, so make sure to elevate your head using an extra pillow under your head and shoulders.
