Tilak Varma becomes 2nd fastest Indian after Sachin Tendulkar, Ruturaj Gaikwad to this IPL record
NEW DELHI: Young Mumbai Indians (MI) batter Tilak Varma on Monday etched his name in the annals of IPL history, emerging as the second-fastest Indian batsman to achieve a remarkable milestone, following in the footsteps of the legendary Sachin Tendulkar and Ruturaj Gaikwad.
Varma reached the 1000-run landmark in 33 innings, just two short of Tendulkar and Gaikwad (31 innings), who equalled Sachin’s record to become joint-fastest in 2022, followed by Suresh Raina (34 innings), Rishabh Pant (35 innings) and Devdutt Padikkal (35 innings) on the list.
Varma’s feat underscores his exceptional talent and prowess with the bat in the highly competitive T20 league. Joining the ranks of illustrious predecessors like Tendulkar and Gaikwad, Varma’s accomplishment signifies a great start to his IPL career and hints at a brighter future ahead.

In the process, Varma also became the third youngest Indian to attain the feat after Rishabh Pant and Yashasvi Jaiswal. Prithvi Shaw and Sanju Samson sit at the fourth and fifth place respectively.

Playing against Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur, Varma played a fine knock of 65 off 45 balls, with the help of five fours and three sixes, guiding Mumbai Indians to 179/9.
Varma’s knock stood tall amidst ruins as MI were 6/2, after the loss of Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan, when he joined Suryakumar Yadav in the middle.
As he continues to impress with his batting prowess, Varma’s achievement serves as a testament to his potential and determination on the cricketing stage.
