Ireland is set to enjoy warmer weather thanks to a subtropical plume that’s wafting our way.
Weather models show winds from the Azores bringing milder air, with temperatures set to reach almost 20C today.
But it’s not all good news, as Met Eireann says the country is in for a muggy few days.
Even with above-average temperatures, unsettled conditions will prevail, with rain, drizzle and gusty winds continuing intermittently for the rest of this week.
Talking about this weekend’s weather, the national forecaster said: “Thursday morning, there will be a fair amount of cloud and some bright or sunny intervals. Rain will develop in the southwest by the end of the morning will gradually spread northeastwards through the afternoon and evening. Highest temperatures 13C to 16C with moderate southerly winds. Cloudy Thursday night with rain and drizzle. Lowest temperatures 10C or 11C in mostly moderate southerly winds.
“Friday will be mostly cloudy with rain and drizzle in Ulster, Connacht and west Munster. Some brighter intervals in Leinster and east Munster. In the evening, rain and drizzle will move eastwards and will be light and patchy. Highest temperatures of 12C to 17C, warmest in the east, with moderate to fresh south to southwest winds. Becoming mainly dry and clear overnight Friday night. Lowest temperatures 6C to 8C in moderate southerly winds.
“Saturday will start dry with sunny spells, rain will spread from the west in the afternoon, turning heavy in the north at times. Highest temperatures 11C to 14C fresh and gusty southwest to west winds, strong for a time in the west and north. Long clear spells on Saturday night with isolated showers in western parts. Lowest temperatures 2C to 4C in mostly light to moderate southwest breezes.
“Sunny spells to start Sunday, showers or longer spells of rain will develop from the west later. Highest temperatures 10C or 11C in fresh and gusty southwest winds. Rain will be persistent and at times heavy in the west and north Sunday night, spreading east and south overnight. Lowest temperatures 3C to 6C in moderate to fresh and occasionally gusty westerly winds.”
In a twist that might surprise some, next week promises a departure from the recent wet weather. Ireland’s meteorological service has said there will be below-average rainfall.
Its forecast for Monday, April 15 to Sunday, April 21 reads: “Rainfall amounts will be below average in week 1. Low pressure to the north of Ireland and high pressure to the south will mean that most rainfall will be further north. Mean temperatures will be around average for early to mid-April.”
After that, current indications suggest temperatures will be above-average for the remainder of April and early May. See full details of Met Eireann’s long-range forecast here.
