In fact, according to Dave Ramsey, the average cost of living in Texas is around 7% lower than the national average. Lower average costs for things such as housing, groceries and healthcare help keep prices on the lower end overall.

You may be surprised by where some cities in Texas land when it comes to costs of living. According to the Cost of Living Index from The Council For Community and Economic Research, Dallas and Plano are more expensive than Abilene or Houston.

  • Cost of living compared to national average: 21% lower

2. McAllen

  • Cost of living compared to national average: 19% lower

3. Amarillo

  • Energy costs: $175.98
  • Cost of living compared to national average: 15% lower

4. El Paso

  • Home price: $318,129
  • Energy costs: $144.43
  • Cost of living compared to national average: 12% lower

5. Abilene

  • Home price: $423,130
  • Energy costs: $187.05
  • Cost of living compared to national average: 8% lower

6. Waco

  • Home price: $392,800
  • Energy costs: $220.39
  • Cost of living compared to national average: 7% lower

7. Houston

  • Home price: $407,506

8. Midland
