trust marks 100 years supporting charities

A trust based is marking 100 years of supporting charities in Jersey and Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

The Sir James Knott Trust was founded in Jersey in 1924 and named after the Tyneside shipowner who went to the island after losing his two sons in World War One.

He left his fortune to benefit others in both locations until his death in 1934.

Since then, the trust has donated more than £3m each year across 500 charitable organisations.

The trust said it had celebrated the centenary with an event and new book about its founder.

Its chairman Ben Speke said it had become "one of the most respected charitable funding organisations in Jersey and the north-east [of England]".

He added: "Sir James was a whole-hearted believer in deeds not words - being in a position to continue making a difference to people and the wider community gives me enormous pride and satisfaction."
