2024 Maserati MC20 Icona and Leggenda Are Inspired by Icons

You can likely already picture the car. With its low hood raking upwards toward the roof-mounted air intake and its wide fenders shadowed by the huge rear wing, the image of the Maserati MC12 GT1 is hard to shake. It's now been 20 years since the Trident brand decided to return to racing with the MC12 as its weapon of choice. Now, Maserati is celebrating the occasion with a pair of special editions called the MC20 Icona and MC20 Leggenda.

Each version receives a special livery that draws inspiration from a specific MC12 in history. If you weren't a motorsport fan in the early 2000s, the MC20 Icona will likely be the more recognizable of the two. The two-tone paint uses Bianco Audace matte white up top and Blu Stradale down low, directly tying it to the MC12 Stradale road car of the past.

The contrasting color scheme even reaches the wheels, with a blue trident logo and blue brake calipers standing out against the chrome-plated wheels. Maserati's Fuoriserie logo is placed on either side of the car, with the Italian flag on each door.

In comparison, the MC20 Leggenda takes after a racing legend (hence the name), matching its black Nero Essenza and teal Digital Mint matte paints to the MC12 GT1 Vitaphonerace car. Black brake calipers peak out from behind the Leggenda's black wheels. Keen-eyed readers will notice the yellow trident logos on the front of the car, on the doors, and on the C-pillars, which pay homage to the GT1's yellow mirrors.

On both models, the twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 has a carbon-fiber engine cover with a plaque reading: "ICONA. UNA DI 20" or "LEGGENDA. UNA DI 20," depending on the model.

Inside, both feature four-way monocoque racing seats finished in blue and silver in the Icona or black and silver in the Leggenda. The mechanical elements are unchanged from the standard MC20, with the V-6 rated for 621 horsepower and 538 pound-feet of torque. Despite having half as many cylinders as the MC12 they honor, the Icona and Leggenda should rocket to 60 mph in just 3.2 seconds based on Car and Driver's testing figures.

Production for the celebration models is being kept to a minimum. As a reference to the 20th anniversary of Maserati's return to racing, the brand plans to make just 20 examples of the Icona and 20 examples of the Leggenda globally. The automaker neglected to list the price of the special-edition cars, but you can expect it to be considerably higher than the MC20's $242,995 base price.
