The warning, which has gone viral after being posted on an X page boasting 5.1 million followers, is suspected of originating from an international hacking group.

Anonymous hackers offer support to demonstrators

Expressing solidarity with protesters, the Anonymous group cautioned parliamentarians against passing the bill, warning of global opposition should they proceed.

"Greetings, citizens of the world. This is a warning message to William Ruto, the Kenyan Government, and all Members of Parliament from Anonymous. It has come to our attention that there are discussions in parliament to pass the Finance Bill, which will unfairly tax the citizens of Kenya.

"On Thursday, June 20, Kenyans will march and #OccupyParliament. We do not want you to amend the Finance Bill; we want you to reject it. Listen to the cries of your citizens, or the people of the world will resist you every step of the way," Anonymous declared. Citizens of Kenya, do not worry, Tuko Pamoja! We are Anonymous, We are Legion, Expect us!" read the letter in part.

They referenced the June 18 protests, alleging that peaceful demonstrators had been subjected to unjust harassment, arrests, and live gunfire by the police force under Ruto's authority.

Anonymous hackers hint at hacking govt systems

The message also hinted at potential hacking into government systems following the leak of MPs' contact details.

The Anonymous senders claimed that if successful, such actions could expose alleged corruption across various government bodies to the world.

"Soon, there will be an uprising of hackers, many of whom may reside in your home country. Your secrets may no longer be safe, and there is a chance that all these secrets will be exposed to show how corrupt and unjust members of this parliament are, embezzling public funds for personal gain."

Attempts by TUKO.co.ke to verify the source of the threatening message have been futile.

How old are Gen Zs, protest organisers?

Meanwhile, one of the organisers of the protests, Annette Barasa said she is motivated to fight for the voiceless and bring down the contentious Finance Bill 2024.

The minor advised Raila Odinga to avoid participating in demonstrations while recognising his past efforts to advocate for the rights of Kenyans.

Barasa, a member of Gen Z, disclosed that she is 17 years old but will not tire of fighting the oppressive Finance Bill. Most of them are 25 years old or below.
