Why Leicester City have hired Steve Cooper as new manager after lengthy process

Steve Cooper has been appointed as Leicester City’s new boss.

The 44-year-old returns to the Premier League with the Foxes after agreeing to take over at the King Power Stadium.

Cooper has agreed a three-year deal with the club and will take over with immediate effect following a lengthy recruitment process.

Cooper said: “I am really excited and proud to be appointed Leicester City’s First Team Manager. This is a fantastic Club with a rich history and passionate supporters.

"I am excited to work with such a talented squad and I’m looking forward to the challenge of achieving our shared ambitions in the Premier League.”

Leicester City Chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha added: “We are delighted to welcome Steve to Leicester City. His vision for the team, including his ability to develop players and implement a dynamic style of play, is very much aligned with our aspirations for the club.

“As a leader, he has the ability to build on the strong relationship that has been forged between our fans and our team, strengthening a bond that will be vital to us re-establishing the Club in the Premier League.”

A former World Cup winner with England’s Under-17s, the Welshman comes with significant top-flight experience having spent 18 months with Nottingham Forest.

That job at the City Ground was Cooper’s first exposure to life in the hot-seat and he lit a fire under Forest, taking them from the bottom of the Championship to promotion.

He then kept them in the Premier League before being sacked six months ago to make way for Nuno Espirito Santo.

He has been linked with several jobs but now will have to draw on that experience on the other side of the east Midlands to ensure the Foxes retain their hard-won status.

Leicester are favourites to go down next season and are currently at loggerheads with the authorities over alleged breaches of the profit and sustainability rules.
