'So Mad at Me': Judd Apatow Recalls Making Matthew Broderick Irate on The Cable Guy Set
Starring Jim Carrey, The Cable Guy was released in theaters in 1996. 28 years later, producer Judd Apatow and Carrey's co-star, Matthew Broderick, reflected on the comedy.
Per Deadline, the two spoke about The Cable Guy when they reunited at the Tribeca Festival. Apatow recalled some of the troubles that the film had endured during production. One of the more harmless issues was that Carrey was often improvising and going all-in with his character, and that sometimes left Broderick feeling like he didn't know any longer how to react to it.

Jim Carrey's Verizon ad proves The Cable Guy should get a sequel
“Jim went so hard at you every day," Apatow told Broderick. "I remember one day, he was so in your face, every single take, you said to me in between takes, ‘I don’t know how to react anymore! I’ve run out of reactions to this!'”
Apatow also shared how there was a problematic night shoot for a scene with Carrey's character, "Chip Douglas," chasing down Broderick's Steven Kovacs. It resulted in a lot of mud getting into the eyes of both actors. Apatow remembered Broderick getting a torn cornea, though Broderick said that it was Carrey who went to the hospital. In any case, the trouble was for naught, as the scene was ultimately scrapped from the final cut.

Meanwhile, Apatow remembered how an error in scheduling had resulted in Broderick spending 14 hours on the set in his trailer. After the actor had been waiting all day, Apatow went to check on him, only to discover a very irate Broderick. Apatow felt so badly about making Broderick wait that he's now much more careful about avoiding having the talent waste their time on movie sets.
“You were so mad at me, you were like ‘don’t do that again’. I always remember that," Apatow said. "I never did it to anyone else again. You were the person who taught me to pay attention to wasting an actor’s time. So in my head, every time someone is not shooting for six hours, I think of the look in your eye that day and how scary it was. You don’t want Bueller mad at you, he’ll cut you!”
