Packers best plays of 2023 #6a: Romeo Doubs pushes the Packers past the Chargers
Welcome to day three of our tour through the Packers' top plays of 2023. Making his first but hardly his last appearance today is Romeo Doubs, who teamed up with Jordan Love to put the Chargers away in Week 11 for a play that tied for 6th place in our rankings.
The Chargers had a hard time getting anything going for most of the day when they visited Lambeau Field last November, but there was an air of inevitability to their go-ahead score in the fourth quarter. Justin Herbert finally willed his offense down the field and connected with Keenan Allen for a 10-yard touchdown to take a 20-16 lead with just over five minutes to go.
What followed probably won’t go down as one of the legendary drives in Packers history, but the result was what the Packers needed. Trailing by four, only a touchdown would suffice, and Doubs was happy to oblige.
As all great drives do, this one opened with a tone-setter: Christian Watson rushed for a single yard. Buoyed by that tremendous success, Love followed up by fumbling on a sack by Khalil Mack, though the ever-watchful Zach Tom managed to recover. But after that inauspicious start, the Packers got a break. On third and 20, Dontayvion Wicks drew a pass interference call on Asante Samuel, giving the Packers 24 yards and a fresh set of downs. After an incompletion to Christian Watson, Wicks built on his previous success with a 35-yard catch-and-run to move the Packers into Chargers’ territory.
AJ Dillon inched the Packers closer with a two-yard plunge, then Doubs took center stage.
With Luke Musgrave drawing safety attention on a vertical route of his own, Doubs had only to beat Chargers cornerback Michael Davis one-on-one, which he did quite handily, deftly snatching away Love’s touch pass from Davis’s flailing hands for a 24-yard touchdown. It was Doubs’ fifth catch of the day and seventh touchdown of the season. And in addition to giving the Packers the lead, the completion pushed Jordan Love over 300 yards for the day, the first time he passed that threshold in his career.
Now ahead 23-20, the Packers got not one but two defensive stands from Joe Barry’s unit, the first thanks to a Rashan Gary sack, and the second with some generous help from Chargers wide receiver Quentin Johnston, who was unable to duplicate Doubs’ late-game efforts and give Los Angeles a chance to steal a win.
That takes care of another of our 2023 top plays, but there’s more to come — especially from Romeo Doubs.
