The Boston Celtics wasted no time in popping gold bottles of champagne with celebrations stretching long into the night after becoming record-setting NBA champions.

The Celtics now stand alone with 18 NBA titles after Monday night's commanding 106-88 win over Dallas Mavericks at TD Garden, a victory that saw them eclipse the 17 titles the Lakers have won.

After getting their hands on the Larry O'Brien trophy, the triumphant Celtics team took the party from the court to the locker room.

There, the champagne and beers began flowing for the history makes. Jayson Tatum, who scored 31 points, 11 assists and eight rebounds, led the way once more for his team on their historic night.

He put the trophy down, got his champagne goggles over his eyes and began spraying his teammates to get the party started.

Kristaps Porzingis was quick to follow, while teammate Sam Hauser started steady with beer on what promised to be a long night of partying.

Footage also surfaced on social media of Celtics fans going wild on the streets of Boston - with many of their songs aimed at Kyrie Irving.

The former Celtics man endured a miserable night, and series, with the Mavericks. His 15 points on Monday night never did much to trouble his old team.

But the night belonged to the Celtics players, who claimed the trophy for the first time since 2008.

'It means the world,' Tatum said on stage after the team received the trophy from NBA Commissioner Adam Silver. 'It's been a long time. And damn I'm grateful.'

Jaylen Brown made sure to praise Tatum for his heroics on the night, telling the TD Garden crowd: 'I share this with my brothers and my partner in crime Jayson Tatum.'

Incredibly, Monday was the 107th career playoff game Brown and Tatum had played together - the most for any duo before winning a title.

Celtics coach Joe Mazzula is now an NBA champion at age 35, and said: 'There's nothing better than representing the Celtics and being part of history.

'You get very few chances in life to be great and you get very few chances in life to carry on the ownership and the responsibility of what these banners are, and all the great people, all the great players that came here.

'When you have few chances in life, you just have to take the bull by the horns and you've got to just own it. And our guys owned it.'

Derrick White, who chipped a tooth in Monday's game before becoming an NBA champion for the first time in his life, said the togetherness of the team was a central reason in their drive for glory.

'We didn't skip any steps from the beginning to the end,' White told ESPN's Lisa Salters. 'Just the locker room and everything, this is special.'
