Justin Herbert has expressed significant appreciation for the return of Shane Day as the quarterbacks coach for the Los Angeles Chargers. Day, who previously served in this role from 2021 to 2022, was instrumental during Herbert's standout seasons, including his Pro Bowl year and record-setting 5,000-yard passing season.
"He's an incredible coach, he's done such a great job for this quarterback room," Herbert said to reporters. "The relationship he has with Easton and I, and now with Max and Casey, he's done a great job of just picking up right and moving right where we left off. Obviously tough losing him for a year, but when the question came up of who I thought was best for that position, Shane was the No. 1 guy. Really glad to be working with him again."
Day was initially let go alongside former offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi following the Chargers' dramatic playoff loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. However, he spent the 2023 season as a senior offensive assistant before being brought back by new head coach Jim Harbaugh.
Herbert is optimistic about the upcoming season with Day back in the fold. The quarterback values the continuity and familiarity Day brings to the team, which he believes will be beneficial for both himself and the other quarterbacks on the roster.
After ending the 2023 season with an injury, Herbert is looking forward to a strong comeback, bolstered by the support and guidance of his trusted coach. The reunion with Day is expected to provide stability and enhance the performance of the Chargers' quarterback room under the new coaching regime.
