Mbappé urges voter mobilisation as France faces political uncertainty

mbappé urges voter mobilisation as france faces political uncertainty

France's Kylian Mbappe runs during a training session in Paderborn, Germany.

On the brink of France's Euro 2024 debut against Austria, Kylian Mbappé has taken centre stage, not just as the team’s captain but as a voice amidst France's escalating political unrest.

Speaking at a pre-match press conference, Mbappé shifted the focus from football to the urgent political crisis at home, calling the situation a defining moment in French history.

"Opportunity to shape country's future"

Typically, the pre-game discussions would be dominated by tactics and the impending challenge from Austria in Group D. Instead, Mbappé addressed the national turmoil, stating, “This is a never-seen-before event. I want to talk to all French people, especially the youth. We are a generation that can make a difference."

"The extremes are knocking on the door of power, and we have the opportunity to shape our country’s future.”

The unrest stems from President Emmanuel Macron’s recent decision to call an unexpected parliamentary election. This move came after Marine Le Pen’s far-right party triumphed in the European Union vote, shaking the political landscape and unsettling financial markets.

The snap election has thrown France into a state of uncertainty, giving the National Rally (RN) a chance at significant political power.

Only about football?

The French football federation has urged for the national team to remain neutral, though it acknowledged players' right to express their views. Marcus Thuram has been vocal, encouraging the public to resist the rise of the far-right RN.

Mbappé backed these sentiments, emphasizing his commitment to values of diversity and respect.

“The game tomorrow is very important,” Mbappé commented. “But there is a situation even more significant than the game. Kylian Mbappé stands against extreme views and ideas that divide people. I want to represent a France that aligns with my values, our values.”

While UEFA enforces rules against political statements from teams or players, Mbappé hinted at potential actions. “Everyone cares. Everyone understands the situation in France. Some feel more comfortable speaking out,” the 25-year-old noted.

“We want to protect all our players and the French team. But we have thought about this, and I think we will do something. So keep your eyes peeled.”

Mbappé highlighted the importance of the upcoming elections, urging young people to vote against extremist views. “We are all on the same side – that's why we can't hide. This situation is more important than football.”

France’s coach, Didier Deschamps, supports his players' right to political expression. “It’s their free will,” he stated. “They are not just great players but also French citizens who are not indifferent to the country’s situation.”

As France gears up to face Austria, the team's attention is divided between the match and the pressing political scenario back home, with Mbappé leading the charge in this critical moment.
