Tommy Tiernan treats wife Yvonne to a once-in-a-lifetime experience in Rome

In scenes that felt like a bonus episode from Father Ted, three Irish comedians Tommy Tiernan, Patrick Kielty and Ardal O’Hanlon, who played Fr Dougal Maguire in the sitcom, met the pope on Friday.

Tommy took his wife Yvonne to Rome with him for the special audience with Pope Francis that took place at the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican City, with 100 other comedians in attendance.

Yvonne shared a picture of the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of her meeting the pope and shaking his hand. The singer and psychotherapist wore a black floral dress for the occasion, with puffed sleeves to her elbow, and her long blonde hair loose.

Yvonne was clearly impressed at the audience with the Pontiff as she shared a picture of the moment on social media, writing: 'Today was quite something…'

Meanwhile, her husband Tommy was wearing his trademark hat and glasses look as he greeted the pope, along with Late Late Show host Patrick and the Father Ted actor Ardal.

And when in Rome Tommy and Yvonne seemed to be making the most of their time in the Italian capital, sharing a selfie as they enjoyed the sunshine, with Yvonne writing: 'Rome-what a day,' along with a love heart.

It was a big weekend of celebrations for the couple, who celebrated Tommy's 55th birthday as well as Father's Day on Sunday. Yvonne paid tribute to her husband, saying he was an 'extraordinary man' and was like a 'rare whiskey'.

She wrote: 'Happy Birthday & Father’s Day to this extraordinary man. Like a fine rare whiskey, he gets smoother, deeper & more dangerous with age.'

Yvonne and Tommy have been married since 2009 and share three children together, with Tommy having three other children from his previous relationship with Jayme Street.
