Rams News: Bleacher Report Lists Rams Contract Among NFL’s Worst

The Los Angeles Rams are gearing up for the 2024 season with high hopes, largely pinned on their veteran quarterback, Matthew Stafford. As he approaches his 36th birthday, Stafford remains a pivotal figure for the team, but his contract situation is raising eyebrows.
Stafford is seeking more guaranteed money beyond the 2024 season, a move that has sparked debate about his current deal. Despite his solid performance last season, his contract is now being scrutinized as one of the least favorable in the NFL.
According to Bleacher Report's David Kenyon, Stafford's current contract with the Rams ranks as one of the 10 worst in the NFL.
"In fairness, Matthew Stafford's performance hasn't slipped close to a problematic level," Kenyon wrote. "He remained a solid quarterback in 2023 despite not having star wideout Cooper Kupp for much of the campaign. The issue is the QB's contract does not afford the Los Angeles Rams much of a window to move on, if desired, through expiration in 2026. Not that L.A. would remotely consider moving on this year, his contract has $86.5 million in dead money this season. After that—no matter if he's designated as a post-June 1 cut—the Rams would have at least $18.5 million in dead money for 2025 and/or 2026. Stafford turned 36 this offseason, and we've seen quarterbacks be productive into their 40s. This is not a dire situation right now. Should his efficiency drop, though, the conversation won't be painless."
The main issue lies in the financial constraints his contract places on the Rams. With $86.5 million in dead money this season, the Rams have limited flexibility. Even if they consider moving on from Stafford after this season, they would still face significant financial penalties in 2025 and 2026.
Stafford's age adds another layer of complexity. While quarterbacks can remain effective into their 40s, any dip in his performance could make this contract a burden for the Rams. For now, Stafford's position with the team seems secure, but any decline in his play could change that quickly.
The Rams have a history of making tough decisions with their roster, but Stafford's leadership and experience are invaluable. The immediate concern is his demand for more guaranteed money, which could lead to tension between him and the team.
After leading the Rams to a Super Bowl victory in 2022, Stafford signed a four-year, $160 million contract, with $63 million fully guaranteed. While this deal was considered team-friendly at the time, it now appears less favorable given the current market.
Ultimately, if Stafford stays healthy and continues to perform well, the contract's negative perception may fade. However, the Rams must navigate this situation carefully to avoid potential pitfalls.
